visit at former aleixo neighbourhood, with renato sousa (a.p.s.p.b.a.), joão queirós (institute of sociology), paulo moreira (curator, festival director)

This guided walk invites the public to explore the material and immaterial traces of the Bairro do Aleixo. The route begins with a visit to the exhibition Aleixo: 5 Towers, 5 Decades, which marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Associação de Promoção Social da População do Bairro do Aleixo (APSPBA). The visit will be led by curator Paulo Moreira, who comments on archival materials and photographs by various authors who have documented the neighbourhood across different periods. The group will then be accompanied to the site of the former Aleixo neighbourhood. On site, the public will be invited to reflect on the demolition process, the displacement of residents, and the physical and symbolic traces that still persist. The walk ends at the only architectural remnant that survived the demolition: the stands of the former neighbourhood sports court. This space serves as a site of memory and informal conversation, providing an opportunity to reflect on the challenges posed by the disappearance of the neighbourhood and to imagine possibilities for its future. This programme is part of the ‘Dislocations’ initiative, in partnership with the Institute of Sociology and the Museum of the Person
