“OUTRA ILHA (32 min, Portugal, 2024) by Eduardo Saraiva Pereira was selected for its tender, human-centered portrayal of migration, identity and cultural resilience. Through the lens of Cape Verdean immigrants in the industrial city of Sines, Pereira traces the building of a community rooted in memory and adaptation. Rather than focusing solely on hardship, the film highlights the quiet strength, dignity and worldview of individuals who maintain their cultural roots while forging new lives. OUTRA ILHA offers an inspiring reflection on belonging and the enduring human spirit, elevating everyday stories into a powerful collective memory.”

OUTRA ILHA (ANOTHER ISLAND) is the portrait of a Cape Verdean community who gave birth to the Amilcar Cabral neighbourhood, living on the outskirts of the industrial port of Sines in Portugal. Over the years, in a spirit of mutual help, the inhabitants have built their own houses and planted their vegetable gardens on a wasteland right next to the factories that they had helped building. Residents, mostly former small farmers, settled in, looking for a better life. Others simply have stopped over and then left to go somewhere else. OUTRA ILHA (ANOTHER ISLAND) puts an emphasis on the presence of some people and the absence of others. Those who have stayed have taken root in this piece of land. However, children who have grown up there have never seen the distant archipelago of their ancestors.
