How can we create with courage and care in spaces marked by exclusion, surveillance, and resistance? We live in times where borders - physical and symbolic - are both expanding and collapsing at once. Drawing inspiration from selected films in this year’s programme, this workshop invites participants to explore how cinema, like architecture, can act as either a tool of separation or connection. We’ll explore how stories shape the collective nervous system - reinforcing othering and fear, or opening space for empathy and transformation. Guided by the principles of NVC (nonviolent communication) we’ll explore the invisible borders within us - internalized habits of control or disconnection - and how they replicate in our work and life. We will learn to recognize power dynamics, access deeper intentions, and engage in hard conversations with integrity and empathy. From there, we’ll experiment with new possibilities for designing with vulnerability, relational power, and a deep commitment to peace and human dignity.
