In 1981 the city of Porto had around 327 thousand inhabitants. Over the following decades, it lost population, registering only 214 thousand in 2017. Between 1981 and 2011, a third of Porto's inhabitants moved to its four neighbouring cities (Vila Nova de Gaia, Maia, Matosinhos and Gondomar), which saw their population increase by around 208.000 inhabitants. These figures contradict various preconceptions, such as the idea that "it is real estate speculation that is emptying the city"; but also that "only tourism can rejuvenate the city". There is a new city on the old outskirts, and to underestimate this fact is to give up on the complexity and diversity of greater Porto. The purpose of this walk will be to draw attention to one of the places with the greatest potential for future development: the Eastern zone and the Fânzeres line.

City walks are held exclusively in English.
