BUREAU with Walter El Nagar, Filipe Felizardo
Our project for the 5th Istanbul Design Biennial presents an aesthetic vocabulary that has the ambition to integrate the critical thinking of intellectuals, scientists and artists that have been working on environmental and bio-political topics of the Anthropocene. The work is a filmed performance of a meal preparation, responding, freely, to the format of the cooking show. Accompanied by a live musical experimentation by Filipe Felizardo (from his series “A Conference of Stones”) in the company of a mineral public, chef Walter El Nagar performed cooking to work in and around decomposition and fermentation. A large cooking table was the stage of the performance, specifically designed to constitute a landscape of living and inert Materia of all kinds. The table, and thus the landscape oscillate between living, growing, decomposition and composition and our relation, as human spectators, to this otherness that we observe, contemplate and integrate into our body as a symbiotic act. “Mush Rooms” is an attempt to acknowledge that we are multi-specifically connected, that what our body is less solid than we think, that the air that we breath is less unsubstantial than what we believe. And that we really exist by dwelling within these multiple states.
The programme was compiled by architect and curator Mariana Pestana, a selection of videos originally released as part of the 5th Istanbul Design Biennial, organized by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), under the title of Empathy Revisited: Designs for More Than One.”
