In these extraordinary times, our thoughts and sympathies go out to everyone whose health is at risk and their loved ones. We also stand in solidarity with our colleagues, friends and professionals from film festivals and cultural institutions in Portugal and around the world, who have been hard hit by this pandemic and the ensuing economic instability.
When we designed the 2019 programme, we never expected that the theme would be so timely in 2021. Bodies Out of Space emerged from the need to reflect on the restrictions and freedoms in place in our built environment. The pandemic brought to light systemic and interpersonal urban issues, which remind us of the importance of our bodies more than ever before.
Our official film selection discusses issues such as environmental borders, racial inequality, urban sprawl and the responsibility of architects in shaping not only spaces but also mentalities. Our competition section showcases a beautiful array of experimental, documentary and fiction films that reveal how different generations of filmmakers from around the world are portraying the conditions in which the human body exists. We are also very proud to bring a celebration of Angolan cinema to Lisbon, with an amazing selection of works produced in the country in recent years. The programme is supplemented by debates and exhibitions which expand upon the themes addressed in the films.
Last but not least, we couldn’t do any of this without you: filmmakers, producers, and professionals, our audience and our friends, our partners and sponsors, and our extraordinary team, who make this festival possible.
The 8th edition of Arquiteturas is quite an unusual one. Last year, Do You Mean Architecture decided to postpone the festival and wait until it was safe to welcome the public to cinemas again. Since then, we have faced many challenges and INSTITUTO joined the organising team to breathe new life into the festival. In this transitional edition, a new phase of Arquiteturas begins: Do You Mean Architecture is handing the challenge of continuing and reinventing the festival over to INSTITUTO.
We wish you an amazing festival!
